Our values awards winners

Our values awards highlight those who are demonstrating our values in an extraordinary way. Nominated by their colleagues, our winners truly deserve to be recognised.

Dynamic

Value award: dynamic

Winner: Katie Holden, assistant strategy manager in the strategy team

Katie Holden, values awards winner

Katie came to NICE last summer when she was recruited as a temporary administrator in the guideline surveillance team. She was proactive, collaborative and took on every challenge from her very first day.

It was not an easy induction as she had not met any of the team. But she took this in her stride, going on to really make her mark with her technical skills, and as a supportive team member.

Katie has made a huge contribution to all of the teams she has worked in. She's supported her peers, taken on new responsibilities and done so many interesting projects around creating dashboards for reporting, process mapping, Miro board roll outs...and the list goes on.

Katie is starting her new role as assistant strategy manager in the strategy team and is already engaging widely with her colleagues and creating new systems for more efficient working.

I'm so pleased to have received this award! I've been very lucky since I started at NICE to work across various brilliant teams. Everyone has been so welcoming and have given me so much freedom and support to develop.

Value award: collaborative

Winner: Anne Murray-Cota, health technology assessment analyst in the technology appraisals team

Anne Murray-Cota, values award winner

Anne has gone above and beyond on a recent technology appraisal topic to demonstrate the values of inclusive and collaborative. This is the first time we've appraised a HIV medicine, which has brought a fresh set of challenges and opportunities to create good working relationships with community stakeholders.

Anne helped to make sure effective and positive relationships were built. She was inclusive and collaborative with colleagues in the public involvement programme (PIP) team. She made sure the HIV communities evidence was accurately represented at the committee meeting, taking into account equality issues and checking the language used before finalising the committee slides (not common practice).

She was dedicated to making sure inclusive language was used and showed respect to this traditionally marginalised community. She was a joy to work with! This inclusive, collaborative way of working will now be taken forward for future topics. Undoubtedly leading to increased inclusion and positive cross-directorate working relationships.

Winning the collaborative values award is great news. I am grateful for being able to work with brilliant and dedicated people here. I am proud of our output and the positive impact our work has on people. Thank you for recognising my work, and I hope I can continue to support our values.

Excellent

Value award: excellent

Winner: Emma McFarlane, technical adviser in the COVID-19 team

Emma McFarlane, values award winner

Emma has brought pride and excellence to her tasks over the last 12 months in the COVID-19 team. She has consistently made efforts to increase the rigour in both surveillance and development of the rapid guidance, while maintaining efficiencies.

In the last 6 months, Emma has identified ways in which we could strive for higher standards. And, as a result, has increased the external appraisal ratings for several rapid guidelines. She has made sure that these standards of excellence are embedded into the development process.

Emma approached a difficult topic (our vaccine-induced immune thrombocytopenia thrombosis (VITT) guideline), with pressure to publish promptly, with calm and resolve to make sure the process was robust. She took ownership of the process, working with colleagues and external stakeholders effectively. Ultimately, she developed a process that addressed the 'political' pressure for rapid guidance and the expert's need for dynamic guidance. But that also meant that the end product was high quality and could be described as 'excellent'.

I'm really grateful to have been nominated and for the kind words. It would not be possible to do all of these things without the support of an excellent team and colleagues.

Value award: inclusive

Winner: Geoff Ellison-Roberts, project manager in the transformation programme team

Geoff Ellison-Roberts, values awards winner

Geoff is the voice of inclusion at NICE - quite literally. Whenever there is a blog to be written about equality and inclusion, it's Geoff's name that appears. Be that about naming conventions, pronouns, LGBTQ+ history and many more subjects.

His eloquence in communicating the message with warmth, feeling and from other's perspectives is nothing other than outstanding. He's been instrumental in establishing the new staff network groups, presenting and discussing proposals with the executive team, the Finance, Strategy and Transformation Directorate and the equality and diversity group to gain support.

Geoff applies this approach to his work too. While running the NICE-wide consultations project, he was the first to talk about accessibility issues for our consultees and what we need to do to improve and make sure we capture diverse views.

He is a warm, engaging, funny and humble individual. In short, Geoff is so unashamedly committed to the inclusivity agenda, besides wearing a t-shirt advertising this, he could not do any more!

I'm surprised and overjoyed to get this award. I dipped my toe into NICE equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) work 4 or so years ago. Back then, having awards which recognised the importance of this work was a distant dream so it’s great to see how far we’ve come as an organisation. In the early days, I had big dreams and no clue, so it took the support of the founding combined staff network chair to find a way of making them a reality (Shelly, thank you!). Now it’s my job to help the next ‘generation’ of staff networks establish. My advice to anyone who wants to be part of this work - get involved! The best advocates for EDI changes are those with lived experience. There's more corporate support than ever before, but the best way to learn is to roll your sleeves up and get on with the changes you want to see. That’s what I did, and look at me now, ‘Halle Berry-ing’ about in NICEtimes.

Kind

Value award: kind

Winner: Merissa Bellew, digital publishing manager in the publishing team

Merissa Bellew, values awards winner

Merissa does so much to help and support others. She goes above and beyond every single day. Even with her busy workload, she makes time to help people, whether that's taking on additional tasks or using her technical know-how to solve a problem. She has a reputation for being kind and considerate to others and is regularly approached by people from across the organisation for help.

In fact, Merissa recently supported a colleague who was going through a very difficult time following their father being diagnosed with a brain tumour, which sadly, eventually led to him passing away. Merissa's response to short notice requests for leave in this situation was to leap into action and reassure her colleague not to worry about work and that everything would be covered.

She was also always at hand to talk and ask how her colleague was doing. This made a huge difference at such a difficult time. In fact, for her values award nomination, this colleague says she could have written a thousand words about Merissa's kindness but is hoping this single example will suffice...

I am really touched that I have been nominated for an award. It means a lot that my colleague took the time out of their working week to nominate me.

Value award: respectful

Winner: Mark Sullivan, head of transformation in the transformation programme team

Mark Sullivan, values awards winner

Mark treats everyone he works alongside with absolute respect. This extends beyond general interactions (anyone who has worked with Mark will tell you how warm, friendly and authentic he is) into treating people as professionals in their respective fields.

He trusts his colleagues with specialist decisions and advice, is open to challenge and respects the input he receives. This creates strong working relationships where everyone feels confident to put forward new ideas, suggestions and opinions. There is no fear of being overruled or a hierarchical approach being taken.

Mark is a joy to work with and through the respect he shows to others, he brings out the best in people. This ultimately is reflected in the high quality outputs of work being delivered across his team and through collaborations with other teams.

This was very unexpected and I'm really touched! We're all incredibly lucky to work for an organisation which promotes mutual respect for one another. I see every day how much we value each other's skills, ideas, and perspectives. And it's a great thing to be a part of.

Empowered

Value award: empowered

Winner: Domini Lawson, programme management office manager in the transformation programme team

Domini Lawson, values awards winner

Domini has only recently joined NICE and is already a recognised and valued asset to the organisation. She has established the new transformation governance framework and provides the new programme delivery boards with honest and constructive appraisal of performance against business plan objectives.

She has set up a strong network of relationships and provides support when there are difficulties with reporting or things are not progressing as hoped.

Domini has been instrumental in the production of the new integrated performance report for the board. She has been empowered to deliver reporting that provides the essential information that the executive team and the board need to monitor progress and understand issues.

She is happy to challenge performance and raise concerns, but in such an empathetic and supportive way, that people are comfortable talking things through with her to reach solutions. She is receptive to challenge herself and has adapted some of the early operations of the programme delivery boards following feedback. Never once grumbling and always receiving suggestions constructively and acting on them swiftly.

It’s an honour to have been nominated for this award and I am truly grateful. Since starting at NICE, I have received such a warm and supportive welcome from everyone I have met. This has allowed me to build strong, trusting relationships with colleagues who continue to motivate and inspire me.
